We are very proud and excited  to announce that YMCA Cardiff has been shortlisted for 2 awards at the national YMCA Youth Matters awards. The vote is now open and closes on Monday 15 August. We are incredibly proud of all our projects, but hope that we can get through to the final for both nominations as we believe both nominations deserve this.

Young Achiever of the Year- Jake Moore

Jake has been on the young carers project since he was about 10 years old. He turned 18 this June. He is a primary carer for his mother, which has limited his options when it comes to training and employment. This year has been an amazing time for Jake. In 2014 he began working on a project with another young carer to demonstrate that cooking can be fun easy and cheap – with some funding this eventually turned into a cookbook.

The cookbook got through to the Money for Life Welsh National Finals. Jake had to promote the cookbook and explain why they made it. Despite not winning, this success inspired Jake to want to push the cookbook idea further and reach more people. So when we were offered a legacy grant of £1,000 to continue the project, Jake came up with the idea to turn the cookbook into an app. We were slightly nervous that we may not be able to do it but Jake was committed to the idea.

Making an app proved very difficult due to the limited funds, but with determination and research we found a small company to help us. Jake learnt a lot of new skills along the way, including planning, design and communication.

The app launched earlier this year and Jake had to get up and explain his story. It was hard for Jake as he has never had to do anything like it before, but he did it. This year has inspired Jake to strive for the best and see obstacles in a different way. During this whole success, Jake is still a young carer and now a young adult carer and is currently holding down a full time job.

Young Carers Life Skills Project, YMCA Cardiff

The ‘Life Skills’ Project works with young carers aged 7 – 18 on improving their ‘life skills’ and ‘skills for caring’. the project has been designed to help young carers on our “Time 4 Me” Young carers Project to develop their skills through activities, accreditation and one-to-one support. Activities include workshops on issues such as confidence, first aid, coping techniques, healthy eating and budgeting etc. Th project has also developed a Youth Forum and throughout the last 12 months young carers who are involved in the young carers forum called PAVE (Providing a Voice for Everyone) have worked on the development of a ‘Get Cooking App’ . This was developed initially as a cook book which helps young carers budget and plan healthy meals for their families. The young carers wanted to take this a step further and managed to secure funding for an App, which is available to download for free on mobile smart phones. Through this work, 2 young carers have achieved a Gold Youth Achievement Award.
