A tailored, specialist and confidential Sexual Health and Relationship Service for young people aged 11-25 in Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan.

Due to COVID-19 the SHOT team will be offering webinars for parents/carers around online safety including what apps young people are using and how to help keep them safe e.g what is sexting?, understanding  consent, and the impacts of pornography. As the world and especially young people are spending much more time online these webinars will be a chance to find out more about what young people may be accessing, the risks and how to support them to stay safer on the web.

Wednesday 15th July @1pm  – Online safety

Wednesday 22nd  July @1pm  – Sexting

Wednesday 29th July @1pm  – peer pressure and understanding consent

The SHOT: Healthy Relationship Service is a project funded through the Families First programme in Cardiff and Children in Need in the Vale of Glamorgan, carried out by YMCA Cardiff. We provide young people in Cardiff with a tailored, specialist and confidential Relationship and Sexual Health Service.

We also support organisations and schools across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan with sexual health training and information and advice on how they can support young people with their sexual health needs.

We work with anyone living within Cardiff aged 11-25 years of age and anyone in the Vale of Glamorgan aged 11-18 years of age around lots of topics. Our one-to-one work is delivered in a place of the young person’s choice (at home, at school, at a youth club, at a café etc.)

We also support young people to access the Department of Sexual Health and their sexual health clinics.

Our work with young people is not limited to a set number of sessions and we tailor it to their needs.

Similarly to the individual work, we offer group sessions to organisations and schools working with young people on the topics shown on the previous page.

These sessions can be a one off or we can deliver a number of sessions to a group.

The team are competent in delivering sessions on topics such as:

  • Contraception information
  • Sexually transmitted infections awareness
  • Identifying positive relationships
  • Peer influences regarding sexual health
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Understanding consent
  • Sexual risk taking
  • Inappropriate sexual language/behaviour
  • Online safety and pornography
  • General sexual health knowledge
  • Puberty and growing up
  • Sex and the Law

We also support young people to access testing and contraception at sexual health clinics within Cardiff.

Our project is funded by Families First and we work in partnership with organisation such as Public Health Wales, Social Care, the Department of Sexual Health and many other voluntary and statutory services across Cardiff.

We accept referrals from all professionals, young people and parents or carers.

To make a referral please contact the SHOT: Healthy Relationships Service by emailing SHOT@ymcacardiff.wales or by calling (029) 2046 5250.

You can also download our one-to-one referral form for Cardiff here and our Vale of Glamorgan referral form here.

We have created a short film with the help of some young people, the Department of Sexual Health and ProMo-Cymru. Funded by Cardiff Partnership Team.

The film helps to dispel any misconception that some people have about attending Sexual Health Clinic.
