CONTRACT: Two year fixed term

SALARY: Starting at £30,997 per annum

YMCA Cardiff Group is seeking a Bid and Policy Writer to fulfil this new role within our organisation.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of at least 2 years’ experience in a similar role.

JOB TITLE: Bid Writer

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Corporate Services


To research, design, write and submit detailed applications for revenue funds to support and develop the services of YMCA Cardiff Group.  To work closely with the Senior Management Team and other key colleagues to research potential funders initiatives. You will establish, maintain, and strengthen relationships with existing and potential funders through regular contact and networking opportunities.

You will also support the Senior Management Team to compose, maintain and review the company policies and procedures ensuring the policy is both in line with the organisational aims and current legislations.


To research, design, write and submit detailed applications for revenue funds to support and develop the services of YMCA Cardiff Group. Specific responsibilities:-

  1. Research potential funders and identify capital opportunities.
  2. Maintain the organisational current sources of funds.
  3. Write, develop and submit quality funding applications and unrestricted
    appeals that are in line with the organisational aims.
  4. Work with colleagues to compile, produce and submit accurate monitoring and evaluating progress reports as required.
  5. Work closely with the Accounts Team to ensure accurate recording of
    received grants and funds.
  6. Ensure funders and income sources are thanked within standards set for
  7. To lead and/or take part in fundraising events as required.


To support the Senior Management Team to compose, maintain and review the company policies and procedures. Specific responsibilities:-

  1. Liaising with colleagues to maintain the organisational policy review
    timetable ensuring policies meet the organisational aims and legislation requirements.
  2. To submit reviewed policies for Senior Management or Board Member
    approval, meeting the policy review date.
  3. To research, design and write any new policy as required and communicate to colleagues and Board.
  4. To assist with the implementation of new and revised policy and procedures.
  5. Ensure that current and new policies are not contradictory to any
    departmental or organisational guidelines.


To carry out other duties that reasonably fall within the scope of the post:-

  1. To adhere to the Organisational Policies and Procedures, including GDPR,
    Staff Code of conduct, Health & Safety and Equal Opportunities.
  2. To attend the Trustee Board Meeting as and when required.
  3. To take an active role in identifying and implementing your learning and
    development needs.
  4. Provide support to colleagues to develop bid/policy writing skills
  5. You must work constructively with other departments within the YMCA
    Cardiff Group.
  6. To actively promote the aims and values of YMCA Cardiff Group both locally and nationally.
  7. To be able to respect the Christian ethos of the YMCA and uphold its values.
  8. Carry out any other tasks that may be within scope of the post to ensure
    the effective delivery and development of the service.



  • At least 2 years’ experience working in a fundraising role
  • Experience of researching and writing detailed proposals to obtain funding
  • A proven track record of raising substantial income on an annualised basis
  • Experience of collating monitoring information
  • Experience of report writing

Knowledge /skills

  • Good understanding and knowledge of trusts; statutory and lottery fundraising and the voluntary sector
  • IT literate (Office 365/Microsoft Office)
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of an outcome-based approach to measuring and monitoring performance
  • Excellent verbal and written and communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Strong analytical, interpretative, evaluative and organisational skills
