Young Person’s Centre at YMCA Plas

YMCA Cardiff is excited to announce is has commenced work on building a brand new purpose built young person’s centre at our YMCA Plas site.

In April 2015, the YMCA took over the running of the former Plasnewydd Community Centre. The YMCA was the first such organisation to agree a Community Asset Transfer with the local authority. Our aim was simple, maintain a local community centre, turnaround the numbers accessing the centre by investing in the building and services and ultimately in the light of cuts to youth funding across the country, open a specialised young people’s area for young people to access.

Today the centre is open 7 days a week and hosts 40 different community and education groups on a daily basis.

Our new young person’s centre will allow the charity to further focus on its existing work with young people and allow for young people’s services to be offered throughout the week and weekend. In the face of cutbacks in youth funding, the YMCA will now be able to offer a much more enhanced service to young people in the area and a specialised provision, staffed with qualified youth work staff. Vitally the new centre will also mean a new entrance way for all our customers, new reception area and additional toilet facilities for all users, further enhancing the services already provided at YMCA Plas.

The build will last 4 months and we expect to formally open the new centre in April 2020. The YMCA would like to thank all its partners and local community groups who have supported us and come back to the centre over the past years for their ongoing support. A special thank you also to the Hodge Foundation, Moondance Foundation and 1910 Trust who have supported our vision for the development of this new young person’s centre.
